Village Games All-Play Tournament
April 19th, 2026
On Sunday, April 19th, 28 folks showed up to play in the All-Play Tournament. Sam Bettencourt organized the teams, using a random selection of players to determine each of the four teams — with the goal of achieving a balance of talent across the teams, but with a randomized selection process to discourage excessive lobbying by players to stack a team. This is always a difficult process, but Sam did a great job in distributing players.
Here are the 4 teams: Since I couldn’t remember the original color as names, I gave them names that are loosely based off of the player’s initials.
A = Press and Jive: Pari, Randy, Eric, Simon, Jesse, Jennifer, & Vitaly
B: Meerkats: Mark Z, Eddie Z, Robert, Kelly, Carla, Yolanda, & Tony
C SpongeBob: Stefanie, Ping, Roy, Marty, Liza, Vicky, & Bob
D: Point Break: Phim, Tana, Babak, Ron, Kevin, Liz, WhiteCap(??)
The tournament had two stages, a pool play stage where each of the 4 teams played each other ,followed by a double elimination bracket round of play.

Videos from 2026 Village Games 4/12/2026
On a Sunday afternoon in April, the Advanced Volleyball Playing residents of Laguna Woods gathered to compete in the annual village games. Sam B. organized the event as he has done for many years. Twenty players showed up ready to play, and a random selection process was conducted to generate teams that ideally had setters, hitters, and passers with a mix of balance and skill. Since classic red, white & blue poker chips were used to determine team membership, the teams were called the red, white and blue teams, based on the random draw process.
The teams were as follows:
Blue Team: Bob A., Patricio, Patty, Hamid, Simon, Phim, and Eric.
White Team: Ping, Eddie Y., Kevin T, Pari, Reza, Eddie Z
Red Team: Mark Z., Marty, Gabi, Jimmy, Ning, Kat, and Sam B.
The competition included an initial pool play round where each team played the other to 21. This was followed by a double elimination bracket play to 25. In the end, the Red & White teams had a close battle throughout, with the White team ultimately triumphing in a final 15 point playoff.
Below are all 8 of the games played.

Videos from the New Mexico Senior Olympics Team Tournament 2025.
This two day tournament took place in Albuquerque with Men’s and Women’s separate competitions on Saturday Nov. 22rd, and co-ed competition on Sunday Nov. 23rd. In this tournament there were 12 women’s teams competing, with seven teams in the Women 55+ bracket. The men’s bracket had only five teams total. My local Albuquerque team, the Killer Tomatoes fielded two teams the Killer Tomatoes 55+ (KT55) and the Killer Tomatoes 60+, although only one player on KT55 was under 60. The videos focus on the games played by the Men’s 55 team, Killer Tomatoes
